The Llanwern solar site was a gordian knot from a Renewables perspective. It was the Lighthouse team that studied the detail of the SSSI registration and concluded that it was the waterways and not the land between that was the focus of the protection. They further concluded that it would actually improve the objectives of the SSSI and not damage them. So, I decided to take the risk and put the project into planning. Lighthouse was right. The Planning Inspector concluded that “the solar scheme would support the objectives of the SSSI” and granted consent for what is now the largest solar scheme in Wales.

I engaged Lighthouse to prepare a comprehensive planning application for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, consisting of 60 battery containers designed to store 234 MWh of energy on a greenfield site. Lighthouse collaborated closely with the Council and other stakeholders, bridging the knowledge gap related to this innovative technology. Despite local planning policies lacking provisions for such systems, they skilfully presented a compelling case to justify the scheme. Remarkably, Lighthouse secured delegated approval within a mere 4 months of submission, demonstrating their proactive commitment to obtaining consent swiftly.
